That’s right folks. Windows Vienna is the new codename for Windows Blackcomb the successor to Windows Vista.
Not much is known about Blackcomb officially and Microsoft is not ready to talk about it yet. However, Microsoft’s blogging guru, Robert Scoble confirmed in a thread reply to a channel 9 video, “since this video was shot the codename for Blackcomb has indeed changed to Vienna. I haven’t gotten the story on this yet, though.”
While Windows Vista is intended to be a technologies-based release, with some UI changes (in the form of the Aero set of technologies and guidelines), Vienna is targeted directly at revolutionizing the way we interact with our home and office PCs.

Another smart move Microsoft, every version of Vista will ship complete with all the operating system versions in one image. Customers will then be able to upgrade if they wish from say, the home version to the professional version by logging onto the Microsoft website.
“No matter which edition you buy you get all the bits and a key to unlock it. Everyone will have all the bits,” said one source familiar with Microsoft’s plans. “Right now we maintain master images for each version of Windows XP and it’s a lot of work. Now there’s just one master image.”
Having a master Windows Vista operating system means customers that buy PCs preloaded with one Vista SKU, Home Basic, for example, will be able to punch their credit card into a Microsoft Web site to unlock Vista Home Premium and more speedily deploy media center features without an on-site visit or requiring a wipe and reload of the system.
The impact on the channel will be “huge” since partners will no longer have to support multiple Windows images for each customer or do reloads, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans said this week. It will also make up-selling much easier and vastly expand channel opportunities, the sources said.

A new font has been created for windows Vista and Office12 to replace the old favourites of Tahoma and Verdana :
With the UI changes happening in Windows Vista and Office 12, we felt like it was time to commission a more modern UI font, designed specifically to take advantage of ClearType. In addition, we wanted a more humanistic, friendly font that would seem less “computer-y” than Tahoma. Most importantly, we wanted the font to take advantage of the research done in Microsoft Typography over the last decade in specifically creating fonts that are easy to scan and read on-screen. These guys know their stuff, and we knew it would make a positive difference in the user interface.
The result is a font called “Segoe UI” which will ship in both Office 12 and Windows Vista. It was conceived, designed, and totally optimized for ClearType, and I think it’s beautiful at both small and larger point sizes.
The result :

According to HotFix, A microsoft employee has revealed that he is currently running Vista build 5247 :
An official Microsoft employee blog today revealed that Windows Vista build 5247 is currently in testing internally. Kevin Remde, a TechNet and MS Blogger, admitted today on his blog just in a passing comment that his build was 5247. The Hotfix has sent an e-mail to Kevin asking for screenshots of the build or any additional information, but the chances of him replying a about zero percent considering it would violate his NDA with Microsoft. Either way, it’s interesting to hear what build they are at from time to time. Here’s the quote:
“I’m currently playing with 5247. What build are you running?”
The current build out to Beta testers and MSDN subscribers is build 5231.

Microsoft released another version of Vista today, based on the code that will be used in the Beta 2 build. This article and pictures are from cnet :
Inside Windows Vista Build 5231
On Monday, October 17, 2005, Microsoft released another interim build of its new Windows operating system. Based entirely on the programming code that will be used in Beta 2 (which is not yet available), Build 5231 emphasizes three points: diagnostics, collaboration, and a new Internet Explorer for Windows Vista. This build of Vista is available only to developers, not the public.

Solutions Center
To prevent system crashes, Microsoft has gathered tools to detect and automatically resolve problems associated with defective physical memory. In theory, you should see no more Blue Screens of Death.
Windows Disk Diagnostics
To guard against hardware failures, Windows Vista monitors the health of the hard drive and can proactively warn a user of impending disk drive failure, allowing users to back up their data and replace defective hardware before the situation turns critical.
New Control Panel icons
The Control Panel icons in Build 5231 reveal controls for auxiliary displays, network map, peer-to-peer, secure startup, Sync Center, and Windows Parental Controls. Some of these controls exist; others are mere placeholders at the moment.

Windows Vista Network Center
Want to share network media players, or just hook up a network router or wireless access points? The new Windows Vista Network Center replaces the My Network Places and the Network Neighborhood found in Windows XP, providing a one-stop location for all of your networking needs, interconnecting your computers and devices on your local network.
Windows Mobility Center
Microsoft has grouped together the tools you’ll need to go mobile. From this control panel, you can adjust display brightness, power plans, volume control among applications, wireless status, synchronization status, and presentation status.
Sync Center
Windows Sync Center allows you to make offline copies of network files, as well as manage offline copies of Web pages saved from Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Vista Favorites Center
Although we saw an earlier preview of IE for Vista in the last build, Microsoft is offering a more finalized beta with a reorganized Favorites Center. Here you can quickly access History, RSS feeds, and, of course, your Internet Favorites. Other changes include grouping open tabs for reuse at a later time (say you like to read certain news sites; now you can open them all at once)

Quick Tabs in IE 7
And, with more than one tab open, IE 7 for Windows Vista allows you to view thumbnails of each page. Called Quick Tabs, you can quickly choose a destination by the contents displayed rather than having to remember the name of each tab. This is another benefit of the new Windows Presentation Foundation graphics system seen in last month’s build.

Windows Media Player 11
There’s also an advanced preview of Windows Media Player 11 in this month’s build. We really like WMP’s clean interface, with program controls placed front and center, à la QuickTime. Along with that, there’s also a new taskbar control so that you don’t have to open WMP to stop, start, or skip to your favorite track.

Migration Wizard
Although not yet ready for public consumption, the new Windows Migration Wizard eliminates the need for third-party software to help transfer data from your old hard drive to a new hard drive, helping you with system upgrades or when your hard drive starts to go south.
